Provides technical leadership in the development and deployment of the mold procurement system. Specifies, procures, and monitors tooling for rapid prototyping, repairs, and participates in manufacturing process support for new and released tooling, including the participation in preliminary, intermediate, and final design reviews. Supports and communicates with customers and MR sales staff as to mold build status and new product launch process. Oversees the entire tool sourcing process including mold expediting, sourcing coordination, communication, and tracking. Actively participates in all facets of process development.
Provides technical advice to project engineers, cost estimating engineers, manufacturing, sales, and external mold building vendors to improve quote accuracy, mold design concepts and manufacturing processes enabling new business. Trains engineering and other technical staff on mold quotes, design practices, machining methods, and metallurgy. Works with cross functional team to prevent manufacturing problems prior to implementation and approval of mold. Develops tooling specifications and construction standards to insure overall tooling quality and efficiency.
Locates, evaluates, and develops new tooling sources both domestically and internationally. Implements qualified tooling vendors capable of supporting new mold design/manufacture, repair to existing tools, and rapid prototyping. Develops a vendor base that supports new product launch as well as daily manufacturing activities.
Enhances the general technical knowledge and abilities of MR by pursuing new mold design concepts and processes. Improves mold quality and molding processes through implementation of new techniques or applications. Leads the effort towards new technology or concepts to keep MR competitive.
Performs other duties and assumes accountabilities as apparent or as delegated, including mutually agreed upon objectives.
RELATIONSHIP TO OTHERS:
Frequent contact with other team functions such as: engineers, cost estimating engineers, sales reps, manufacturing engineers, internal/external tool shop personnel, and customers. Works effectively in a team environment, contributing to team goals and objectives.
DIMENSIONS OF POSITION:
Responsible for procurement of molds that meet or exceed the company's standards and the customer's requirements. Provides leadership to the cross-functional team in preliminary, intermediate and final design reviews. Excellent verbal and written skills. Proficient use of a computer with emphasis on engineering applications. Proven track record as a energetic project manager.
